Lung factor

Where everything started

The Lung factor research group originated in Biomedicum Helsinki in 2008, when Marjukka Myllärniemi founded the research group after working as a post-doctoral researcher in professor Vuokko Kinnula’s group in the beginning of the 21st century. ”Idiopathic lung fibrosis began to seriously interest us because the cause of the disease is unknown and at the time there was no medical treatment for it”, says Marjukka, “The first idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis patient I met was a young, under 40 years old mother.” This scared the investigator and it encouraged her to look for new treatments. However many patients still need lung transplantation and hence new better medicines.
